Title: House on Haunted Hill *EXCLUSIVE*
Post by: OolongAiki on August 26, 2007, 01:23:20 AM
In case any of you aren't in the know, I LOVE horror movies, and am especially fond of really old ones.  This house is was used in one of my favorites, "The House on Haunted Hill", which was Vincent Price's first starring role.  The actual house is also used as the villian's base of operations in "The Replacement Killers" starring Chou Yun Fat and Mira Sorvino, and as the outside of Harrison Ford's character, Decker's apartment building in the movie "Blade Runner", directed by Ridley Scott.  It's really called the Ennis-Brown House, and sits at 2607 Glendower Avenue in Los Angeles, Ca.

The Ennis House is the magnificent creation of world- famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. It is one of the most outstanding residential structures existing in the United States. The house was built for Mabel and Charles Ennis in 1924.

The Ennis House is one of the first residences constructed from concrete block. Wright transforms cold industrial concrete to a warm decorative material used as a frame for interior features like windows and fireplaces as well as columns. His sixteen inch modular blocks with intriguing geometric repeats invite tactile exploration. The art glass windows and doors, reminiscent of examples from the earlier prairie period, here achieve greater color suddenly as they graduate in intensity from darker at the top to lighter at the bottom. The wisteria motif mosaic above the living room fireplace is the extant example of the only four art glass mosaics Wright ever designed. The metal work based on Mayan imagery is not of Wright's design, and may have been included at Mr. Ennis' request, yet from the very large iron grill at the main entrance to such minute details as light switches and lock plates, there is a unity of conception and materials that complements the entire structure.

This beautiful example of the genius of Wright has been studied by architects, architectural historians, artists and art lovers from practically every country in the world. The house is listed by the U.S. Department of the Interior in the National Register of Historic Places, it has been declared a Cultural Heritage Monument by the City of Los Angeles, and it has been designated a California State Landmark.

"What about the concrete block? It was the cheapest (and ugliest) thing in the building world. It lived mostly in the architectural gutter as an imitation of rock-faced stone. Why not see what could be done with that gutter rat? Steel rods cast inside the joints of the blocks themselves and the whole brought into some broad, practical scheme of general treatment, why would it not be fit for a new phase of our modern architecture? It might be permanent, noble beautiful." -Frank Lloyd Wright

The Ennis House is actually the fourth in a series of textile block houses built by Wright.  The first, the Millard House, was built in Pasadena, CA in 1923.  The Storer House was built in Los Angeles in 1923 along Hollywood Boulevard.  The third was the Freeman House, also built in Los Angeles, and also built in 1923.  In fact, Harriet Freeman gave the house to the USC  School of Architecture to protect and preserve.

I've actually been to see the actual house, and it was one of those experiences that takes your breath away.  I spent hours and hours building this house to near exact specifications, with a few changes called for by the mechanics of the game.  I even consulted a 3-D model walkthrough to get it just right.  I am very proud to present this house exclusively to this site.  I hope you all enjoy my blood, sweat and tears.

All of the custom content was designed by me especially for this house.
