SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Maybe they can call it "The Sims: The Movie."
Electronic Arts Inc. has sold the movie rights for "The Sims," the best-selling computer game of all time to 20th Century Fox, Variety said on Friday.
"The Sims" is one of EA's biggest franchises and, including sequels and expansions such as "The Sims: House Party" and "The Sims: Vacation," has sold nearly 85 million copies since it debuted seven years ago.
Oft-described as a "virtual dollhouse," the game puts players in charge of simulated people, helping them make friends, find satisfying jobs and buy household items in order to stay happy.
"The Sims has done an interactive version of an old story, which is what it's like to have infinite power and how do you deal with it," the Hollywood industry paper quoted Rod Humble, head of The Sims Studio at EA, as saying.
"The Sims" was created by legendary game designer Will Wright, known for his quirky titles that eschew linear storylines in favor of letting players create and explore their own worlds.
Variety did not mention financial terms of the deal. Spokesmen for EA and Fox could not immediately be reached for comment. Fox is owned by News Corp..

Maybe they should pick Sims made by the community to play the characters? That would be cool.

when i first saw that article i thought they probably got the idea from the youtube videos There are some youtube videos out there where people put plumbbobs over their heads and pee on the floor....its pretty funny. I don't have the links handy (since dour was the one that found them and linked me to them) but if you search sims2 on youtube you should be able to find them
It seems from the few articles about it that they are only doing it based on the sims not sims2? It would be more interesting to do it based on the entire sims line so they could start with some sims being young in sims1 to being married (or having some other sort of drama) in sims2, and bring up all the weird storylines: bella's disappearance, those brothers being abduction by aliens, the old lady's affair with the grim reaper the produced a child she gave up to another family, etc
I dont see how this could make a great movie though...the game itself isnt all that exciting until the player makes it exciting. Player-made drama lol Unless they plan on just using the idea of the sims and not use any of the characters or storylines....then they could come up with whatever they want and just stick a plumbbob on top of them and call them sims.
I wonder if they'd be able to get any a-list actors to be in the movie? That would be pretty funny to watch them be sims lol

Maybe a completely animated Sims movie? That way they can do all of the semi-violent stuff and not have to worry about anyone actually getting hurt. Do you think it will be in Simlish?

Oh, geez. I work for a video place and with all the Hell we've taken over movies in other languages (Spanish, French, Mayan, etc.) I can't imagine what it'd be like having to tell customers, "You know that movie is in Simlish right?" *headdesk*

People are weird about subtitles. The week Pan's Labyrinth came out people were really cheesed off about it being in subtitles. To the point a couple of my employees had the movie actually thrown at them by customers. Last week Apocalypto and Letters From Iwo Jima came out and NO ONE has minded the subtitles. The very same people who were angry about P.L. didn't mind...I despise subtitled movies for this reason. Since I'm going to have these problems anyway I would find it much more amusing if it was in Simlish with NO subtitles. Yes, I'm a meanie. *evilgrin*
