I found the remnants of this home while traveling through Wilcox County, near the quiet town of Camden. It was sitting way back on the property and overgrown with kudzu (a rather vicious plant that was originally introduced as ground cover...now BOY, does it cover the ground! Not even goats will eat the stuff.)
Much of the back end of the house had collapsed, and where I put garages, there used to be servants quarters. Since the house was built in 1840, you can guess what that meant. The owners of the property were happy to take me on a tour of what was left, and now I give what I saw, plus some extrapolation and imagination, to you.
The home is built in the great Southern tradition of Antebellum and Gable, a style a lot of modern architects call "Georgian".
Just look at the beautiful pictures. Can you hear it? It's the soft rustle of crinolines beneath the fashionable watered-silk gowns of the country's young Southern belles, otherwise known as G.R.I.T.S. (Girls Raised In The South). As they sashay through the grand entrance of The Savannah their thoughts turn to the forthcoming festivities. Back yard barbecues held at this stately home are often weekend events that hold a wealth of possibilities. Peeking past the rim of her parasol, she smiles a coy smile--the gentleman with the rogue's reputation from Atlanta is making his way towards her. The genteel, Southern way of life is alive at The Savannah. Welcome home.
